Organic farming: new EU rules adopted

On 22 May the Council adopted new EU rules on organic production and the labelling of organic products. The new regulation will enter into force on the third day following that of its publication in the Official Journal of the European Union and will apply from 1 January 2021. Read more

Agriculture MEPs urge fair funding, no renationalisation

The Agriculture Committee adopted on Wednesday (16 May), by 32 votes in favour to five against, with six abstentions, a set of proposals on the reform of the Common Agricultural Policy for after 2020. The post-2020 EU farm policy must be smarter, simpler, fairer and more sustainable, but also well financed and truly common to continue deliver food security in the EU. The Agriculture Committee’s ideas should now be scrutinised by the Parliament as a whole during its 28 - 31 May plenary session in Strasbourg. Read more

WHO on Monday (14 May) released "REPLACE" - a step-by-step guide for the elimination of industrially-produced trans-fatty acids from the global food supply. WHO calls on governments to use this action package to eliminate industrially-produced trans-fatty acids from the food supply. Read more

EU budget approval before European elections looking increasingly uncertain

Bulgarian foreign minister Ekaterina Zaharieva admitted yesterday during the General Affairs Council that there was no certainty that the new long-term EU budget for 2020-2027 could be adopted before next year’s European elections.
