EU 'dual quality' food probe to visit Hungary

EU researchers will visit supermarkets in Hungary next week to test a new methodology aimed at spotting any quality differences in the same food products offered for sale in richer and poorer member states. The tests are part of the European Commission's response to the issue of 'dual food quality', which has been raised by leaders from several central and eastern European countries. EU budget: New Single Market programme

The Commission is proposing a budget of €4 billion for the Single Market Programme. In addition, €2 billion allocated under the InvestEU Fund, in particular through its Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises Window, will significantly contribute to the objectives of programme. The new Single Market Programme follows the Commission's vision for the next long-term budget proposed on 2 May 2018. Read more

Czech government may investigate German retailer over "give away" prices

The Ministry of Agriculture is taking unprecedented action against a supermarket chain over a promotional campaign. The ministry objects to German retailer Kaufland having offered shoppers the chance to buy a litre of milk for the token price of one Czech crown. Read more

MEPs and ministers agreed to restrict farmers’ antimicrobial use

Plans to curb the use of antibiotics on farms, so as to keep resistant bacteria out of human foods, were informally agreed by MEPs and ministers on Tuesday (5 June). The agreement will be put to a vote in the Environment committee during its 20-21 June meeting. Read more

EU budget: the Common Agricultural Policy beyond 2020

For the next long-term EU budget 2021-2027, the Commission is proposing to modernise and simplify the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). Today's proposals give Member States greater flexibility and responsibility for choosing how and where to invest their CAP funding in order to meet ambitious goals set at EU level.
